摘要: AGNs and almost all massive galaxies contain supermassive black holes
at centre. It is generally believed that the supermassive black holes are
single. However, in Cold Dark Matter cosmology galaxies form hierarchically
and the frequent galaxy mergers bring two black holes together and form
supermassive black hole binaries. Once the two supermassive black holes get
coalesced, they become a strong source of gravitational wave radiations and
the primary targets for the proposed Laser Interferometer Space Antenna
(eLISA) and ongoing Pulsar Timing Arrays (PTAs). However, it is extremely
difficult and challenging, if not impossible, to answer the question whether
the black holes in normal galaxies are single or not and the view of public
is correct. In this colloquium, I will talk about our efforts in addressing
this problem. We proposed to probe a supermassive black hole binary in galaxy
when it tidally disrupts a star passing by and gives rise to a giant X-ray
flare. In 2009, we made a predication of characteristic drops in the light
curves of stellar tidal disruption events (TDEs) in SMBHB systems, caused by
the presence of the secondary SMBH. With the predication, we discovered the
first pair of SMBHs in normal galaxies in 2014. The discovery triggered a
burst of news reports by more than one hundred of prestigious international
news medias and astronomical institutes in more than 40 kinds of languages,
in particularly by “Nature Physics”, NASA, ESA, MPIfR, and INAF, and
written in Wikipedia. It was commented in the news reports with “These are
the kinds of finds that really change the way we think about the universe,
and open up whole new areas for astronomers to study.”
