Abstract:
Millihertz gravitational-wave signals carry information about binary evolution, black hole formation, and dynamics in galactic nuclei. To investigate these astrophysical processes with gravitational-wave detectors, we must first establish what the detectors can measure and what additional information joint observations can provide. In this talk, I will present our team’s research on the TianQin gravitational-wave mission. We have systematically quantified TianQin’s ability to detect and measure the parameters of major source classes. We also led the preparation of the White Paper on TianQin Gravitational-Wave Astronomy, which helped establish TianQin’s scientific goals and detection requirements. For joint observations, we have studied networks combining TianQin with other gravitational-wave detectors. The configurations examined can substantially improve source localization and sensitivity to anisotropies in the stochastic gravitational-wave background. More precise localization also helps identify electromagnetic counterparts and enables multimessenger observations. Reliable data analysis is equally essential to trustworthy astronomical conclusions. Our team previously resolved a longstanding disagreement over how to assess the statistical significance of LIGO candidate events, and has developed methods for signal identification and parameter analysis tailored to TianQin’s observing characteristics. The talk will discuss the scientific basis and conditions of applicability of these results, as well as questions that remain for future observations.
