Abstract: Star formation sets the conditions for planet formation and life origin. On large scales, massive stars drive the evolution of galaxies. The formation of massive stars is a fundamentally important yet unresolved problem in astrophysics. In particular, the initial conditions are not well known due to lack of in-depth observations. In recent years, sensitive high-resolution observations of high-mass star formation regions have revealed lines of evidence that challenge the current star formation theory. I will review these surprising observational results and discuss how further, systematic observing campaigns are designed to put more stringent constraints on the initial conditions of high-mass star formation across our Galaxy.
