Abstract: Galaxies are the fundamental units and building blocks of the Universe. In the current favored cold dark matter model, structures are formed hierarchically via dark matter halo merger and accretion. Semi-analytical model is very useful to model galaxy formation in a cosmological context. In this talk I will introduce the general framework of structure formation and show how semi-analytical model shapes our understanding of dark matter-galaxy connection and the main physics governing galaxy formation.

Biosketch: Dr Xi Kang obtained his PhD at Shanghai Astronomical Observatory in 2004. From 2005-2009, He was a postdoc at Oxford University and Max-Planck-Institute for Astronomy. Dr Xi Kang is now a research scientist in Purple Mountain Observatory, Nanjing, and leading a MPG-CAS partner group working on galaxy formation, large-scale structure, and weak gravitational lensing. He has published 70 papers with more than 2600 citations.
