Abstract:
High-contrast imaging aims at studying astrophysical objects that are within 0.1 to 1 arcsec from central stars. Using ground- and space-based coronagraphic instruments, the field has directly confirmed the existence for nearly two dozen exoplanets. Engineers and astronomers are developing state-of-the-art instrumentation and data reduction methods, aiming at directly imaging the first Earth-like exoplanet in the 2040s. I will briefly review the field of high-contrast imaging, including but not limited to: exoplanet and circumstellar disk imaging and spectroscopy, coronagraphic imaging with Hubble and James Webb, and our first coronagraphic imaging the host galaxy of a quasar with Hubble.

Graduated from Xiamen University with a B.Sc. in Physics and a B.Ec. in Mathematical Statistics in 2013, Dr. Bin Ren is currently a Marie S.-Curie Fellow based at the Côte d’Azur Observatory. He obtained his PhD from the Johns Hopkins University, and conducted postdoctoral work in California Institute of Technology. His research focuses on interdisciplinary work between applied math and astronomy, and he works on both astronomical science and telescope instrument observational techniques. His study on the Hubble/STIS coronagraph is included in its instruction manual. With a total of over 50 published research articles, he is the first or corresponding author for over 15 of them. He has published 5 papers with 7 undergraduate and graduate students: all the advisees are the first authors for these papers, among which all the undergrads have been accepted to top global astronomy PhD programs (U Arizona, U Michigan, U Hawaii).
