Title: Novel statistical methods and their applications in Galaxies and Cosmology

Abstract:
In this talk, two interesting statistical methods, namely kernel density estimation (KDE) and the Copula method, will be introduced. These are two potent statistical tools that have emerged in modern statistics and are extensively employed in areas such as finance and hydrology. However, their utilization in astronomy remains relatively limited. In recent years, we have meticulously examined the application of these two methods in Galaxies and Cosmology. For instance, the Copula method has been used to estimate the radio core luminosity function of active galactic nuclei, to study the radio-infrared correlation of star-forming galaxies, and to explore its application in cosmological constant estimation. Additionally, a luminosity function calculation method based on the principle of kernel density estimation has been developed. Grounded on these efforts, two Python software packages, kdeLF and Ascopy, have been developed. Besides presenting the aforementioned work, this report will also investigate some other potential application scenarios of these two statistical methods.
Bio:
袁尊理,湖南师范大学“潇湘学者”特聘教授,博士生导师,湖南省“杰出青年基金”获得者。2007年、2013年分别在南京航空航天大学、中国科学院云南天文台获得工学学士和理学博士学位。2013年8月-2021年9月在中科院云南天文台工作,在此期间曾入选了2020年云南省高层次人才培养支持计划“青年拔尖人才”专项。2021年9月加入湖南师范大学;2022年9月-12月获英国皇家学会国际交流计划支持,赴英国牛津大学天文系访问。袁尊理教授主要研究领域为星系与活动星系核、天文统计方法。已在ApJS、ApJ、MNRAS等国际知名天文期刊上发表论文20余篇。先后主持承担了国家自然科学基金面上项目、湖南省杰出青年科学基金等科研项目多项。参与SKA(平方公里阵)的先驱者—MeerKAT望远镜的一个国际巡天项目,为MIGHTEE(The MeerKAT International GHz Tiered Extragalactic Exploration)合作组成员。
