Abstract:

Submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) are primarily high-redshift (z~2–3), dusty, and star-forming galaxies. Over the years, finding SMGs has become one of the most efficient methods for selecting dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) at high redshifts. Despite many successes, SMG studies have been limited by the poor angular resolution of single-dish telescopes, which are typically used to select SMGs. Although interferometry arrays such as ALMA can locate SMGs and allow for unambiguous identification of their counterparts, the rest-frame near-IR of SMGs is usually covered by Spitzer/IRAC, which has only ~2" angular resolution. The low resolution also often leads to blended IRAC images, which make it difficult to derive accurate spectral energy distributions, photometric redshifts, and stellar morphology. JWST provides us with a unique opportunity to probe the stellar properties of the SMGs. In this talk, I will introduce what we have learned from the JWST/NIRCam-observed ALMA targets and discuss the general properties of ALMA sources.

Bio:

Dr. Cheng Cheng obtained his bachelor's degree from USTC and a PhD from the Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He has worked at NAOC/CASSACA as a postdoctoral researcher, assistant researcher, and currently an associate researcher. He has gained observational experience using various telescopes such as ALMA, FAST, and more. Additionally, he has participated in several international collaborative projects including CANDELS, CLAUDS, and JWST/PEARLS. In recent years, his research has primarily focused on studying the properties of star-forming galaxies at different redshifts.
